IMPROVISED COOKING: How to make tomato sauce/stew, roasted chicken and rice with a few ingredients.

Like I said, I want to be back for the better. So today I have a recipe to share. I looked into my refrigerator today and I could only see chicken, ketchup, mayonnaise, bottle water and what else…….I think that’s pretty much it. But that’s not the point. I’m here to show you how I make this dish with fewer ingredients than usual. Rice and stew is a popular dish eaten in Nigeria, although it’s eaten in other places like Ghana as well…etc but i’m here to show you the improvised way of making it especially in the absence of other ingredients and when you don’t have money to buy them. If you’re not Nigerian, Ghanaian,….etc that’s familiar with this dish, you can just try it and tell me what you think. it’s just a simple dish, although many people have different  ways of making theirs, this is just mine. Okay enough talking, let’s get right into it.

Ingredients I used throughout the video

1 big tin of tomato paste

1 onion(can you see, I only had 1 large onion in the house)

pepper(could be dry of fresh, but i used dry)


Curry powder

salt to taste


canola oil


maggi cubes


  1. Get your chicken in a bowl or small pot.
  2. Add your pepper(preferably dry), whatever pepper you have since this is what we have cooking process.
  3. Add your curry powder(I used like a teaspoon).
  4. Add your thyme.
  5. Add your onion.
  6. Add a little butter/Magarine.
  7. Add your oil.
  8. Then massage your chicken with the ingredients, so that you could get some in the chicken, you can also leave it to sit for a while.
  9. Then set your oven
  10. And throw dem chickens into the oven. 🙂
  11. My chicken was in the oven for like an hour, I can’t really tell because I up and about doing other stuffs while cooking.
  12. But I set my oven to 280 degrees.
  13. Leave your chicken to get ready for you to eat.


Added the same ingredients for my roasted chicken except oil,

Then put on heat and leave to boil.


I practically just boiled the rice…..

Put your water in boiling water enough to cook the rice, add a little salt and leave to boil.



I only had dry pepper, tomato paste, curry powder, thyme, salt, maggi cubes, butter and my boiled chicken.

  1. Put pan on heat
  2. pour oil and allow to heat a little(for like a minute or 30 seconds).
  3. pour onions and stir fry.
  4. pour tomato paste, cover the pan for a while and allow to fry(3 minutes).
  5. Then pour chicken stock into the paste and leave to heat for a minute.
  6. Check for salt, add if needed.
  7. Add butter/margarine.
  8. Add pinch thyme.
  9. Add curry powder, pepper.
  10. If sauce is too thick, add a little water and leave to heat for 2 minutes.
  11. Your sauce is ready.

Although I used just tomato paste to make the stew(main ingredient), it shouldn’t be used regularly. Canned foods are not really healthy. Everything is better when it is fresh. so if you can get fresh tomatoes or you already have fresh tomatoes then you can blend and use that instead.
